Given:

Length of the ladder = 17m

Height of the window = 15m

To Find:

The distance of the foot of the ladder from the wall

Solution:

The ladder, the wall and the window make a right-angled triangle.

And so we can apply hypotenuse formula here which is:

(side of the triangle)^2 + (side of the triangle)^2 = (hypotenuse)^2

Let the distance of the foot of the ladder from the wall be 'a'.

Here, the sides of the triangle are

  • height of the window
  • distance of the foot of the ladder

According to the formula,

a^2 + 15^2 = 17^2

a^2 = 289 - 225

a^2 = 64

a^2 = 8^2

a =8

Thus , the distance of the foot of the ladder from the wall is 8m.
