Given: 2.5 L of nitrogen gas exerts a pressure of 760 mmHg at 473 K

To Find: temperature is needed to reduce the volume to 1.75 L at 1140 torr

Solution:

= \frac{P1V1}{T1} = \frac{P2V2}{T2}

= \frac{1140 x 1.75 x 473}{760}× 2.5

= 496.65K

The temperature change is not very large. Most of the volume reduction comes from the increase in pressure.
