$\frac{a - 2}{a - 4} = \frac{a - 3}{a + 1}$

$or, {a}^{2} + a - 2a - 2 = {a}^{2} - 3a + 4a - 12$

$or, {a}^{2} - a - 2 = {a}^{2} + a - 12$

$or,{a}^{2} - {a}^{2} - a - a = -12 + 2$

$or, -2a = -10$

$or, a = \frac{10}{2}$

$therefore,a = 5$
