A.2 Read the story and answer the questions which follow.
Alexander the Great was a king in ancient Greece. He was a great warrior and had won many
battles. His ambition was to conquer India. He came to India and a fierce battle was fought
between the armies of King Puru and Alexander. At last, King Puru was made captive.
Alexander was overjoyed with his first victory in India. One day Alexander mounted his
horse, Bucephalus, and quietly slipped out of his camp to see more of the Indian countryside.
He noticed great destruction caused by the battle. He felt proud of his victory.
He rode on and entered a forest. It was a cold wintery evening. At a distance he saw some people
seated around a bonfire, performing a ritual. All of them were sitting without any upper garments
on their bodies. He felt sorry for them and went back to his camp to bring some blankets.
By the time Alexander returned to the spot, it was already dark. He had with him some
soldiers carrying some warm clothes. The priests performing the ritual looked at them. Then
the leader of the priests greeted Alexander with a smile. Alexander walked proudly towards
him. He then said, 'O priest, I'm Alexander, the great conqueror. I've brought a few warm
clothes for all of you.'
The priest said, 'So you are Alexander, the great conqueror. We are grateful to you. But we
cannot accept gifts from a conqueror.'
'Why?' said Alexander with surprise.
The priest replied, 'You have conquered several countries. You have robbed them of their
riches. How can we accept something that has been taken away from others by force?'
Hearing this Alexander didn't know what to say.
'Young man,' the priest explained, 'if you want to be a real conqueror, conquer people's hearts
with your love. You will then have a real and lasting victory.' Without saying anything, Alexander
returned to his camp. That night he pondered over the new meaning of the word 'victory'.
