A 20 lb railroad car moving at a speed of 0.5 m/s to the right collides with a 35kg car which is at rest. If after the collision the 35kg car is observed to move to the right at a speed of 0.3 ft/s determine the coefficient of restitution between the two cars

Explanation:

Mass of railroad = 20 mg

Speed=0.5 m/s

Mass of car = 35mg

Coefficient of restitution = 0.05

We need to calculate the speed of car

Using conservation of momentum

mrur + mcuc = (mr + mc) v

Mr Ur + mc Uc

(mr + mc)

Put the value into the formula

v = (20 * 0.5 + 0)/(35 + 20)

V= 0.18 m/s

Hence, The speed of the cars after collision is 0.18 m/s,
