The total length of wire is 20 m

Let, the length of longer part of wire be 'x' m.

so,

shorter part will be 2/3 x

x +  \frac{2}{3} x = 20  \\ \\ 3x + 2x = 60 \\  \\ 5x = 60 \\  \\ x = 12

So, lemgth of the longer piece of wire will be 12 cm

The length of the long piece = 12 meter

Given :

A 20 meter long wire is expressed in two parts such that the length of one part is 2/3 times the length of the other part

To find :

The length of the long piece

Solution :

Step 1 of 2 :

Form the equation to find the length of the long piece

A 20 meter long wire is expressed in two parts

Let the two parts are x meter and (20 - x) meter

So by the given condition

\displaystyle \sf  x =  \frac{2}{3}  \times (20 - x)

Step 2 of 2 :

Calculate length of the long piece

\displaystyle \sf  x =  \frac{2}{3}  \times (20 - x)

\displaystyle \sf{ \implies }x =  \frac{2(20 - x)}{3}

\displaystyle \sf{ \implies }3x = 40 - 2x

\displaystyle \sf{ \implies }3x + 2x = 40

\displaystyle \sf{ \implies }5x = 40

\displaystyle \sf{ \implies }x =  \frac{40}{5}

\displaystyle \sf{ \implies }x = 8

∴ The two parts are 8 meter and 12 meter

Hence length of the long piece = 12 meter
