Given:

Volume of solution  is 250 ml contain 21.4 gm weight of polymer in toluene and osmotic pressure is 0.055 atm at 27 °c.

To Find:

Formula mass of the polymer

Solution:

Equation of osmotic pressure-

Osmotic pressure (π) = C×R×T

C = Concentration or Molarity of solution in molml^{-1}

C= \frac{W}{M}×\frac{1ooo}{V  in ml}

W = weight of polymer gm

M = Molecular mass of polymer gmmol^{-1}

R = gas constant l atm mol^{-1} k^{-1}

T = Temperature k

π = 0.055 atm

T= 27°c ₊ 273 = 300 k

Weight of polymer = 21.4 gm

Volume = 250 ml

R = 0.0821  l atm mol^{-1} k^{-1}

Molecular mass of polymer = ?

Osmotic pressure = \frac{W}{M}×\frac{1ooo *R *T}{V in ml}

0.055 = \frac{21.4}{M} \frac{1000*0.0821*300}{250}

Molecular mass of polymer = approx 38000 gm mol^{-1}
