GIVEN :

  • Initial temperature ( T₁ ) of gas = 0° C
  • Pressure is constant

To find :

Temperature at which volume of gas reduce to half

Solution :

Let -

  • Initial Volume = V₁
  • Final Temperature = T₂
  • Final volume = V₂

Now , We can apply Charles Law as Pressure is constant.

Charles Law , states that at constant pressure volume of gas is directly proportional to its temperature in Kelvin scale.

That is , V ∝ T

 \sf \implies \:  \dfrac{V_1}{V_2} \:=\: \dfrac{T_1}{T_2} \:  \:  \: ......equation \:  1

Now we need to find Temperature in Kelvin scale

➝ T₁ = 0 + 273

➝ T₁ = 273 K

Also , volume reduce to half

➝ V₂ = V₁ ÷ 2

\sf \implies \:  \dfrac{ \:  \:  \: V_1 \: \:  \:  }{ \dfrac{V_1}{2} } \:=\: \dfrac{273}{T_2}\\  \\  \\ \sf \implies \:   \:  \:  \: V_1   \:  \times  \: \dfrac{2}{V_1}  \:=\: \dfrac{273}{T_2} \\  \\ \sf \implies \:   \:\dfrac{273}{T_2} \:  =  \: 2 \\  \\ \sf \implies \:   \:\dfrac{273}{2} \:  =  \: T_2 \\  \\ \sf \implies \: \:  \: T_2 \:  =  \: 136.5 \: K

Now , T₂ = 136.5 K

Converting it into Celcius,

T₂ = 136.5 - 273

T₂ = -136.5° C

Option D) -136.5° C
