Answer:

As the question was originally written:

If 3√1-a/a +9=19 - 3√a/1-a then what is the value of a?

It could have been interpreted: 31–√−aa+9=19−3a√1−a

But this is obviously not what you meant. You probably meant:

3 √( (1-a)/a ) + 9 = 19 - 3 √( (a / (1-a) )

In math notation, we could write this as:

[(math)]3\sqrt{\frac{1-a}{a}}+9 = 19–3\sqrt{\frac{a}{1-a}}[(/math)]

(remove parentheses around (math) and (/math) to use it)

31−aa−−−√+9=19–3a1−a−−−√

If you do not need to show your work … if you merely want to find an answer, one way is to change all a variable values to X, then put both sides into the Y= editor as I show here:

Set Y1 = left side of equation, Y2 = right side of equation

I did some experimentation before I zoomed in on this set of window limits. I could have used Xmin = 0 and Xmax = 1, with Xscl = 0.1, but the above was good enough.

I graphed the equation and saw two intersections.

I used [2nd] [Trace] then [Intersect], then used the methods there to identify that I wanted to find the intersection of these two lines, and put in initial guesses in order to see the final two images.

My answers agree with the person who showed you how to do it analytically.

I do strongly recommend that you read that message, then do it on paper a few times, so that when you see a similar problem on a test, you’ll have no trouble.
