A 3500 kg SUV traveling at 15 m/s South runs into the rear end of an 400 kg compact car sitting at a stop light in an elastic collision. If the compact car is going forward at 6 m/s right after the collision, how fast is the SUV traveling? Round to the nearest hundredth.

Answer:

conservation of momentum m1u1+m2u2=m1v1+m2v2 here m1 is 3500kg and m2 is 400kg u1 is 15m/s u2 is zero (at stop) v1 find out and v2 is 6m/s then putting the value 3500×15+400×0=3500v1+400×6 , 52500+0=3500×v1+2400 , 52500-2400=3500v1 , 50100= 3500v1 then v1= 50100/3500 v1 is 14.3 m/sec
