total height of the tree = 36m

let the height of the standing part be x

then the broken part = 36- x

the entire thing will form a right angled triangle

whose

base (ground) = 10m

hypotenuse = 36 - x

perpendicular = x

by pythagoras theorem

(36 - x )^2 = x^2 + 10^2

1296 - 72x + x^2 = x^2 + 100

1296 - 100 = 72x

72x = 1196

x = 16.61

the answer is 16.61 m
