A 3600 kg truck travelling east at 10 m/s enters an icy intersection and collides with a 2000 kg car travelling south at 24 m/s. They become coupled together in the collision. Draw a diagram showing the initial and final situations. Be sure to include vectors to represent the velocities and their components

Answer:

Final speed of the two trucks after colliding is given as

v = 10.7 m/s

direction of the final velocity is given as

\theta = 53^o South of East

Explanation:

As we know that there is no external force on the system of two trucks

So here the two truck will collide and move together

So here we have

m_1v_1\hat i + m_2v_2\hat j = (m_1 + m_2) \vec v

now we have

3600(10) \hat i + 2000(24)\hat j = (2000 + 3600)\vac v

now we have

\vec v = 6.43 \hat + 8.57 \hat j

so the two truck will move together with above velocity

magnitude of the velocity is given as

v = \sqrt{6.43^2 + 8.57^2}

v = 10.7 m/s

direction of the final velocity is given as

tan\theta = \frac{8.57}{6.43}

\theta = 53^o South of East
