We can use Pythagoras' Theorem to find the distance:

a² + b² = c²

Find the distance:

Let x be the distance.

The height is 36 dm and the length of the ladder is 39 dm

x² + 36² = 39²

x² = 39²  - 36²

x² = 225

x = 15

Answer: The distance is 15 dm.
