Imagine that our petrol tank of the is divided in to 3 parts which can hold same amount of fuel. (No petrol tank is divided like that but just imagine).

Now one part of the petrol tank is filled with 20 liters of petrol.

The remaining 2 parts must have the same capacity as the part we just filled with 20 liters of petrol. So let’s fill one remaining part with 20 liters of petrol. Next fill the last part with 20 liters.

How much petrol did we consume ?

2ndpart−−−−−−>20liters

3rdpart−−−−−−>20liters

which means we just have to add those together. And that gives us 20l+20l=40l

So the petrol tank can hold 40 more liters of petrol or whatever liquid you put their.
