SOLUTION :-

 \\ \sf \: (a - 4)(a - 2) = {a}^{2} - 8 \\ \\ \bigstar \boxed{ \bf \: (x + p)(x + q) = {x}^{2} + (p + q)x + pq} \\ \sf \: here \: .. \: x = a \\ \sf \: \: \: \: \: \: \: \: \: \: \: \: \: \: p = - 4 \\ \sf \: \: \: \: \: \: \: \: \: \: \: \: \: \: q = - 2 \\ \\ \sf \: putting \: values \: ... \\ \\ \sf \: {a}^{2} + ( - 4 - 2)a + ( - 4)( - 2) = {a}^{2} - 8 \\ \\ \sf \: \cancel{{a}^{2}} - 6a + 8 = \cancel{ {a}^{2}} - 8 \\ \\ \sf \: - 6a = - 8 - 8 \\ \\ \sf \: - 6a = - 16 \\ \\ \implies \underline{ \boxed{ \sf \: \pink{a = \frac{8}{3} }}} \\ \\

Hence , a = 8/3.
