A 5.0 Kg block has a coefficient of friction of .15 on a flat surface. What is its acceleration if you exert a force of 15 N sideways on it when it is at rest? (Find the friction force first)

The force of friction can be calculated using the formula: f = μN, where f is the force of friction, μ is the coefficient of friction and N is the normal force. Since the block is on a flat surface, the normal force is equal to its weight, which is mg, where m is the mass of the block and g is the acceleration due to gravity. Substituting the values given in the problem, we get: f = 0.15 * 5.0 * 9.8 = 7.35 N.

The net force acting on the block is the applied force minus the force of friction: F_net = 15 - 7.35 = 7.65 N. Using Newton’s second law, F_net = ma, where a is the acceleration of the block, we can solve for a: a = F_net / m = 7.65 / 5.0 = 1.53 m/s^2.

So, the acceleration of the block is 1.53 m/s^2.
