The molecular weight of the substance X is 34.2g.

A 5% solution of cane sugar is isotonic with 0.5% of X.

We have to find the molecular weight of the substance X.

Given, 5 % of solution of cane sugar, we can say, 5g of solute solution in 100 ml of solution.

So, molarity of cane sugar , C₁ = no of moles of cane sugar/volume of solution in L

= (5g/342 g/mol × 1000)/(100ml)

= (5)/(342 × 0.1) ...(1)

[ ∵ molecular weight of cane sugar is 342 g/mol ]

Similarly, 0.5% of X, we can say,  0.5 g of X in 100 ml of solution.

∴ molarity of X, C₂ = (0.5 × 1000)/(X × 100) = 5/X ....(2)

For isotonic solutions,

concentration of 1st solution = concentration of 2nd solution

⇒ C₁ = C₂

⇒ 5/(342 × 0.1) = 5/X

⇒ X = 34.2 g/mol

Therefore the molecular weight of the substance X is 34.2g.
