a 50 kg pitching machine (excluding the baseball) is placed on frozen pond, the machine fires a 0.40 kg baseball with a speed of 35m/s in the horizontal direction. What is the recoil velocity of the pitching machine? (assume negligible friction)

Mass of pitching machine = M = 50kg

Recoil velocity of machine = V = ?

Mass of baseball = m = 0.4kg

Velocity of baseball = v = 35m/s

Using conservation of linear momentum,

MV = -mv

(-ve sign indicates that recoil velocity and velocity of ball are opposite in direction)

V = -mv/M

V = -0.4*35/50

V = -0.28m/s

Hence the machine will slide on the frozen pond with a recoil velocity of 0.28m/s in the opposite direction as of the baseball
