A 500 g pistol lies at rest on a frictionless table. It accidentally discharge and shoots a 10 g/>bullet parallel to the table. How far has the pistol moved by the time the bullet hits a wall 5m<br />away?​f

According to the problem. the mass of pistol,m = 500 g = 0.5 kg

the mass of bullet, p = 10 g = 0.01 kg

Now after the accident, the velocity of the bullet be u and the velocity of the pistol be v.

Final momentum after the accident is, mv + pu

According to the law of momentum conservation,

mv + pu = 0

or, v/u = -p/m

         = - .01/.5

          = - 0.02

let the bullet takes time t to move through 5 m.

and in t time the pistol will move through s

t for the bullet is = 5/u

t for the pistol is = s/v

Therefore,

5/u = s/v

=>s = 5v/u = 5(-0.02)

      = -0.1 m
