Explanation:

Given A 50 Hz transformer takes 75 W input at 1.5 A and 120 V. If the primary winding resistance is 0.4Ω, find the no load power factor

  • So power input to transformer Po = 75 W
  • Primary current Io = 1.5 A
  • Primary voltage V1 = 120 V
  • Primary resistance R1 = 0.4 ohms
  • While primary winding loss in copper P c = Io^2 x R1
  •                                                                     = (1.5)^2 x 0.4
  •                                                                    = 0.9 W
  • So loss of No load iron will be Pi = Po – Pc
  •                                                       = 75 – 0.9
  •                                                      = 74.1 W
  • No load power factor cos θo = Po / V1 x Io
  •                                             = 75 / 120 x 1.5
  •                                            = 0.4116 (lagging)
