The Great Train Journey by Ruskin Bond is a collection of fourteen short
stories. The theme of the book is to find back ‘Time to Stand and Stare’. The
author says that once there used to be plenty of time when children would
spend their time around trains and railway tracks and railway stations. Well,
nowadays this all seems a thing of difficulty because people of today hardly
have any time to stand and stare anything that fascinates them.
Know the Author
Ruskin Bond is an Indian author of British Descent. He was born in Kasauli, in
Himachal Pradesh, in 1934. He lives in Landaure, a hill station in the Himalayas,
near Mussoorie. He has written many short stories, essays, novels and books
for children. Ruskin Bond was awarded the Padma Shri in 1999.
The main characters of the story are:
Suraj- Suraj is the main character. He has nothing to do in his summer
holidays. He wanders all day here and there, especially at the railway station
and on the tracks.
The man( stranger) – The man is having a dirty, bearded face and paanstained grin. He usually reserve this compartment for himself without ticket.
