Answer:

30

Step-by-step explanation:

From the initial ratio we can get the initial quantity of Y and X.

X : Y = 2 : 1

The total ratio is = 2 + 1 = 3

The total amount of the chemicals = 60

X = 2/3 × 60 = 40 liters

Y = 1/3 × 60 = 20 liters

Let the amount of chemical X withdrawn be z.

The new amount is :

40 - z

The new ratio will be :

(40 - z) / 20 = 1/2

We solve for z as follows :

2(40 - z) = 20

80 - 2z = 20

80 - 20 = 2z

60 = 2z

z = 60/2

z = 30

The quantity of chemical X extracted from the mixture is :

30
