A 8000 kg engine pulls a train of 5 wagons, each of 2000 kg,
along a horizontal track. If the engine exerts a force of 40000 N
and the track offers a friction force of 5000 N, then calculate:
(a) the net accelerating force and
(b) the acceleration of the train.

Answer:

Explanation:

5 wagons each of weight 2000 kg means

total weight of the wagons =10,000 kg.

total weight of the wagons along with engine = 18000 kg.

force applied=40,000 N

net accelerating force = 40,000 - 5000=35,000 N.

35000 N=18000 N * acceleration

therefore acceleration =1.9
