(a) A 83 mm diameter through-hole is to be cut in a block of pure
iron (Valence = 2) by ECM. The block is 54 mm thick. To
increase the speed of the cutting process, the electrode tool will
have a center hole of 76 mm which will produce a center core that
can be removed after the tool breaks through The outside
dameter of the electrode is undersæd to allow for overcut. The
overcut s enected to be 0.125 mm m on a side. If the efficiency
of the ECM operation is 85%, what current will be required to
complete the cutting operation in 20 minutes? Take Specific
material Removal Rate = 3.69 x10-² mm/ amp-sec. [6 marks]
ib) Suppose the same hok mentioned above in (a) were to be cut
ung EDM rather than ECM. Using a discharge current 27
amn, how long would take to cut the hok? Take material
ramal rate equaton - 4.75x!Current (D) [Melting temperature
1539°C for iron. [4 marks)
