The order you should solve an arithmetic problem is:

First calculate

Between brackets (…)

Then

2. Power and root

Then

3. Multiplication and dividing

Lastly

4. Adding and subtracting

Since the problem a*(b*c) has one first level and two third level arithmetic functions. You should first calculate (b*c). But because the arithmetic function (multiplication) between the brackets is as the same as outside, the brackets are unnecessary.

When an arithmetic problem has the same level functions (in this case multiplication level 3). It does not matter which order you calculate it.

Let’s take a look at two examples:

Does it matter witch order you calculate:

a+b/c?

Answer: Yes, because you have a level 3 and 4 arithmetic function, the order will matter.

a+b/c =! (a+b)/c

Note =! means: not equal.

2. a*b/c?

Answer: No, because there is one arithmetic level: 3. The order will not matter.

(a*b)/c = a*(b/c) = a/c*b
