Average velocity = Net displacement/time taken

Average speed = Total distance/time taken

Net displacement can be zero but total distance cannot be zero.

So, average velocity can be zero but average speed cannot be zero.

for example if a body moves from a point A to B and back to A it covers some dist. but the displacement remains 0 due to initial and final point being the same..similarly, we cn say that it have some speed but its velocity will be zero because displacement is also zero.
