                               Construction of Falaj

a. A mother well or main well, is dug deep in to the earth to reach the underground water supply from a higher point.

b. Smaller channels are built closer to the area of irrigation to spread out from the main channel, allowing water to reach  planted areas.

c. Some channels would run along the surface, allowing water to be carried to where it was needed.

d. The flow and speed of water relies on gravity.

e. Water flows from the highest point to lowest point of the landscape.

f. Long channels are built horizontally underground, near the water table or aquifer.

g. Shafts are built from the surface of the earth to the level of the main channel every fifty meters (or more).

h. This keeps the channel clean.
