1,3-dichloropropane is the chemical compound (A). It produces propane when reduced with red P and Hl.

(A) produces malonic acid after being hydrolyzed with an alkali and then oxidised (B). Propylene glycol is made by replacing the Cl groups in 1,3-dichloropropane with OH groups. Malonic acid is formed when primary alcoholic groups are oxidised to carboxylic groups. When malonic acid is heated, thermal decarboxylation of beta keto acid produces acetic acid (C).

With NaHCO3, both (B) and (C) produce effervescence. The existence of COOH groups is indicated by this.

When malonic acid (B) reacts with ethyl alcohol, diethyl malonate (D) is formed, which is a common synthetic agent. The condensation of benzaldehyde and diethyl malonate is the following stage (D). During condensation, a water molecule is lost.
