4 cells of 1.5 volt each must be connected in series to get a resulting 6 volts.
They should be connected as the second cell's positive terminal connected to the negative of the first cell.
Only then it will be 1.5 + 1.5 + 1.5 + 1.5 = 6
If the positive terminal of the second cell will be connected to the positive of the first, or negative of the second to the negative of the first, then the EMFs will get cancelled out, and the resulting voltage will not be 6 volts.
