President A P J Abdul Kalam said he visualised a developed India in 2020.

Drawing a picture of India by 2020, the President said that India will be a nation where the best of health care is available to all the billion population; a nation where the governance uses the best of the technologies to be responsive, transparent, easily accessible and simple in rules; a nation where poverty has been totally alleviated; illiteracy and crime against women are eradicated and the society is unalienated; a nation that is prosperous, healthy, secure, peaceful and happy; a nation that is one of the best places to live in.

He was addressing the 92nd session of the Indian Science Congress.

Kalam's vision also includes a nation that absorbs technology for sustained wealth generation and higher employment, a nation where education is not denied to any meritorious candidate because of societal or economic discrimination, a nation which is the best destination for the most talented scholars from all over the world.

"These are the transformations needed for competitive India and we have to work for it," Kalam concluded.

The President expressed confidence in the country's developments in science and technology.

Kalam assessed five important science and technology (S&T) areas, which will influence Indian society in healthcare, education, employment generation and defence during 2005.

These include stem cell research, interactive tele-education delivery system, bio-fuel, supersonic cruise missile, and molecules to drug.

Kalam also talked about technology through ages, applications, treatment of Parkinson's disease, solar energy, science, technology and society.

Kalam also gave an insight into his experiences with three well known scientists, D S Kothari, Homi Jehangir Bhabha and Vikram Sarabhai.

He said: "These three Indian scientists, all of them physicists, started physics research institutions that blossomed into defence technology, nuclear technology and space technology. When I study deep into their knowledge and the vision, I believe they would have realized that science has to be promoted through political systems. It is essential that technologies that give immediate benefits to the people directly or indirectly should be successfully put forward. Another important message conveyed by these three great scientists is that basic science is very vital for growth of technology and growth of scientific and technological human resource and thereby transforming the society."

"Particularly for young scientists who have assembled here, I am giving these role models, so that when you are doing scientific research you always ask yourself: 'Can my research and development task contribute to the upliftment of the people of my country'," Kalam added.
