India celebrates 151 festivals in a year. That’s a huge number. Out of which, Diwali is the most famous and largely celebrated festival in India as it marks the Hindu New Year. It comes in the month of October or November every year. It is celebrated in the memory of Lord Ram’s return to Ayodhya from forests after 14 years. The people of Ayodhya welcomed Lord Ram their houses. They lighted earthen lamps before their houses and they decorated their houses with flowers.

Preparations

Days before, the people start preparations for this festival. People clean their houses, whitewash and decorate them. The merchants paint their shops and set them. The markets get a new look.

How is celebrated

In this festival, people buy new clothes and many things. in the evening the earthen lamps and electric bulbs of different colors are lighted. Crackers are burnt. Goddess Laxmi is worshiped. People send greeting to their relatives who join to enjoy this festival. Thus this festival increases the feeling of unity and brotherhood.
