Let W denotes the whole given work.

According to given data,

(i) A & B independently can complete the work W in 30 days and 40 days respectively. Hence,

(ii) A & B independently in 1 day can complete the amounts of work W/30 & W/40.

(iii) A & B together started the work W and after few days B left. After that A completed the remaining work in 16 days.

(iv) Let D denotes the duration (in days) when A & B worked together before B left.

From (ii), (iii) & (iv) we get,

D*(W/30 + W/40) + 16*W/30 = W

or D*(1/30 + 1/40) = 1 - 8/15

or D*(7/120) = 7/15 or D = 120/15 = 8 (days)

Therefore it is evident from above that

A & B together worked for 8 days before B left and then A alone completed the remaining work in 16 days.
