Given :  A and B participate in a 1 km race. The ratio of their speeds 9 : 10. A is given a handicap of 100  meters.

To find :  What will be the distance between the two when the winner breasts the tape

Solution:

A and B participate in a 1 km race. The ratio of their speeds 9 : 10

in a given time if A covers  9 m  then  B covers  10  m

if  A covers 1 m then B covers = 10/9 m

if A covers  900 m then B covers = 900 * 10/9   = 1000 m = 1 km

Now A is given a handicap of 100   meters.

=> When A covers 900 m then he has covered a distance of 100 + 900 = 1000 m = 1 km

This is exactly the same distance B will cover  when A cover 900 m

Hence both will complete the race at the same time

distance between the two when the winner breasts the tape is ZERO
