A and B possess books in the ratio of 3:4. B and C possess them in the ratio 2:3. If C gives 20 books
B 3
to A, then A, B and C possess books in the ratio 4:4:5. Find how many books A, B and C originally
had?

Answer:

A/B=3/4 and B/C=2/3=> B/C=4/6

Hence,A:B:C=3:4:6

let rational constant be x

then A=3x

B=4x and C=6x

since C gives 20 books to A then

new A= 3x+20 and new C= 6x-20

new ratio given 4:4:5

so,(3x+20)/(6x-20) = 4/5

=>5(3x+20)=4(6x-20)

=>15x+100=24x-80

=>180=9x

=>x=20

so,A had books= 3x=3*20= 60

similarly B= 4x=4*20=80 and C = 6x= 6*20= 120
