Answer:

1.Below a height of about 86 kilometers, the three main gaseous elements, which together account for about 99.9% of the total atmosphere, exist in essentially constant proportion to the total: nitrogen comprises 78% of air by volume, oxygen comprises 21% of air by volume, and argon comprises another 0.9%.

2.About 21% of Earth's atmosphere is oxygen. ... Oxygen plays a critical role in respiration, the energy-producing chemistry that drives the metabolisms of most living things. We humans, along with many other creatures, need oxygen in the air we breathe to stay alive.

1. Name the major constituent of the atmosphere.

Ans: Some major constituents of the atmosphere are:

  • Nitrogen
  • Oxygen and
  • The remaining volume of air is accounted for a number of gases including argon, carbon dioxide, helium, hydrogen and Ozone, etc.

The most abundant gas in the air is nitrogen forming about 78% of the volume of pure dry air. Oxygen makes up and other 21% of it. These two gases does together constitute about 99% of the volume of the air.

Among the other gases found in the small proportion- Argon is the most abundant which forms about 0.9% of the volume of air and 0.1% are the other gases.

2. Highlight the importance of oxygen in the atmosphere.

Ans: Oxygen is necessary for breathing, burning and decomposition of organic matter. It also combines with various elements of the environment causing chemical changes through the process of oxidation.

3. Name the variable components of the environment.

Ans: The important variable components of the environment include water vapour and particles of dust, smoke, salt, pollen grains, etc.

Amount of variable components varies from place to place and time to time. Water vapour content of air is highest over oceans in summer season. Dust particles are most abundant over sandy regions.

4. Name two gases that are heavier than air.

Ans: Carbon dioxide and oxygen are the two gases that are heavier than air.

5. State the importance of atmosphere.

Ans: The presence of atmosphere on the earth is perhaps the most important factor making its environment suitable for living organisms. Although a number of other planets also have atmosphere around them but they cannot sustain life. Therefore the composition of the earth's atmosphere is suitable that makes the life possible on the earth and various gases present in the earth's atmosphere play a vital role in sustaining and making life possible.

6. Why does the density of air become lower in the upper part of the atmosphere.

Ans: The density of air become lower in the upper of the atmosphere because of the upper part of the atmosphere there is less weight on the air molecules making them less composed. The air at the lower part in dense because it is pressed down. Some of the gas is constituting the atmosphere are relatively heavier than the other ones.

7. Name the major layer of the atmosphere from ground upward.

Ans: Major layers of the atmosphere from ground upward:

  • Troposphere

  • Stratosphere

  • Mesosphere

  • Thermosphere
  1. Ionosphere
  2. Exosphere
