Question: Describe how Sedimentary Rocks and Igneous rocks are formed. Give two examples of each.

Answer:

  • Igneous rocks form when molten rock (magma or lava) cools and solidifies.Ex:-granite basalt, obsidian, pumice etc.
  • Sedimentary rocks originate when particles settle out of water or air, or by precipitation of minerals from water. They accumulate in layers.Ex:-sandstone, coal and chalk etc

Question: On the basis of occurrence, classify Igneous Rocks.

Answer:

Igneous rocks that have crystals large enough to be seen by the naked eye are called phaneritic; those with crystals too small to be seen are called aphanitic.

Question:Name the three rock forming minerals.

Answer:The three rock forming minerals are feldspars, quartz and micas.

Question:What are Batholiths?

Answer:A batholith is a large mass of intrusive igneous rock, that forms from cooled magma deep in Earth's crust.

Question:What is Metamorphism? What are its causes?

Answer:Metamorphism is a process of mineral assemblage and texture variation that results from the physical-chemical changes of solid rocks , these rocks are known as metamorphic rock.Ex:-Gneiss,Slate,Marble,etc.

Question:Name a few important characteristics of Sedimentary

Rocks.

Answer:Characteristics of sedimentary rocks are-

  • They are also called as Secondary rocks.
  • They are found on Earth in a large amount, about 75%.
  • They are formed due to deposition of sediments,so they are soft. ...
  • They are generally non shiny and non crystalline.
  • Sedimentary rocks are classified into 3 on the basis of the sediments.

Question:Name the various types of Metamorphic Rocks.

Answer:There are two main types of metamorphic rocks:

  1. those that are foliated because they have formed in an environment with either directed pressure or shear stress, and
  2. those that are not foliated because they have formed in an environment without directed pressure or relatively near the surface with very little pressure .

Question:Name the agents involved in the formation of sedimentary rocks.

Answer:Rain water, wind, ice or the running water are the agents involved in the formation of sedimentary rocks. These agents break and carry on loose material and deposit it in various low lying areas to convert into the solid sedimentary rocks.

Question:Give examples of metamorphic rocks formed from igneous and sedimentary rocks.

Answer:

  1. Marble is a metamorphic rock that is formed from the sedimentary rock limestone.
  2. Quartzite is a metamorphic rock that is formed from the sedimentary rock sandstone.
  3. Slate is a metamorphic rock that is formed from the sedimentary rock mudstone.
  4. Granulite is a metamorphic rock that is formed from the igneous rock basalt.
