Every day Milkha would walk a distanceof 10 km barefoot from his house to avillage school, Kot Addu, which was apart of Pakistan, crossing long stretches of scorching sands, striding through two canals and balancing his books balanced on his head.

He was desperate to join the army butwas rejected four times. Milkha, who learnt early to never give up, finally gotthrough after a friend put in a word. Itwas only then that his life as a runner began. In 1951, he ran his first race.
