2. Kalpana Chawla was born in Karnal, Haryana. She got married to an American citizen and thus became a naturalized American. So, she is called an Indian-American. She married flight instructor Jean-Pierre Harrison

3. After becoming a naturalized U.S. citizen in April 1991, Chawla applied for the NASA Astronaut Corps. She joined the corps in March 1995 and was selected for her first flight in 1996.

4.  According to the journalist, to be an astronaut one should have enormous ability. An astronaut must know a lot about everything, from biology to astrophysics to aeronautical engineering. In this age of super-specialisation, you must have encyclopaedic knowledge to be an astronaut.

5. Her first space mission began on November 19, 1997, as part of the six-astronaut crew that flew the Space Shuttle Columbia flight STS-87. Chawla was the first Indian woman to fly in space. She spoke the following words while traveling in the weightlessness of space, "You are just your intelligence." It was a 15 days 16 hours and 34 minutes. During this time she went around the earth 252 times traveling 1.45 million km. The crew performed experiments such as pollinating plants to observe food growth in space.
