Based on an analysis of the speaking interaction in language behavior, it was found that speaking is affected by the amount of information (low, medium, high) the listener has about the referent.Speakers with poorly informed listeners ( low information ) used more words, made more repetitions, and gave more complete descriptions of the referent than speakers with moderately- or well-informed listeners.

Rate of speaking was not affected by amount of listener information, and, in addition, a complex relationship was found between subsequent speaker recall of the referent and amount of listener information.
