then equation 1: x+y2= 11

equation 2: x2+y=7

Subtract eq 2 from eq 1.

the result is: -x2+x-y+y2=4

Grouping gives: (y-x)(y+x-1)=4

Now there are only two ways to get a product of 4. Either 1*4 or 2*2

So that gives a result a=4 and b =9
