We simply use algebraic identities here.
( a+b) ^2 + (a-b)^2
= a^2 + b ^2 + 2ab + [ a^2 + b ^2 - 2ab ]
= 2 ( a ^ 2 + b ^ 2)
= 2 a ^ 2 + 2 b ^ 2
