I think that the question is not correct.

It should be expand (a + b)²

Now, (a + b)²

= (a + b) (a + b)

= a² + ab + ab + b²

= a² + 2ab + b²

We also can find another identity -

(a - b)²

= a² - 2ab + b²

and (a + b + c)²

= a² + b² + c² + 2ab + 2bc + 2ca
