Given,

a + b = 4 \\ \:  \:  \:  \:  \:  \:  \:  \:  \:  \:  a = 4 - b \:  \:  \:  \:  \ \:  \:  \: (i) \\

Putting the value of a in equation (ii),

 \:  \:  \:  \:  \:  \: (4 - b) - b = 3 \\ 4 - 2b = 3 \\ 2b = 4 - 3 \\ 2b = 1 \\ b \:  =  \:  \frac{1}{2}

Taking this value of ‘b’ in equation (i), we get,

a = 4 -  \frac{1}{2}  \\ a =  \frac{(8 - 1)}{2}   \\ \\ a =  \frac{7}{2}

∴ a = 7/2, b = 1/2
