Answer:

What is the formula of (a-b) 5?

For small expansions like (a-b)^5 we might as well use Pascal’s triangle although the binomial theorem works well too.

1 1

1 2 1

1 3 3 1

1 4 6 4 1

1 5 10 10 5 1

so

(a+b)5=a5+5a4b+10a3b2+10a2b3+5ab4+b5

but we want (a−b)5 so we have to remember that b is negative.

(a−b)5=a5−5a4b+10a3b2−10a2b3+5ab4−b5

remember a negative multiplied by a negative is a positive so even numbered powers of b is positive and odd numbered powers of b is negative.
