actually the identity is

a²-b² = (a+b)(a-b)

for example if a=2 and b=3, then

a²-b² = (a+b)(a-b)

=2²-3² = (2+3)(2-3)

=2²-3² = 5×-1

=2²-3² = -5

and if we solve it without the identity, then

2²-3²

=(2)²-(3)²

=4-9

= -5

so this is how this identity is used.

hope this helps you...
