A, B & C form a triangle where ∠ BAC = 90°. AB = 14.9 mm and BC = 19.2 mm. Find the length of AC, giving your answer rounded to 1 DP.

Let AC be the base of the triangle then

AB is the perpendicular of the triangle.

AB=14.9 mm

BC=19.2 mm

Using Pythagoras Theorem,

Hypotenuse^2 = Base^2 + Perpendicular^2

19.2^2 = Base^2 + 14.9^2

19.2^2-14.9^2=Base^2

(19.2-14.9) (19.2+14.9)=Base^2             ∴ a+b) ( a-b) = (a^2-b^2

4.3 × 34.1 = Base^2

146.63 =Base^2

√146.63 = Base

12.11 mm≈ =Base

Therefore,

AC=12.11 mm
