Firstly though it seems poetic and a happy coincidence, it shows the ingrained attitude of male child preference in the society of Sarojini Naidu’s times (very less so even today). Not only that, the next two lines also talks about a wife serving household with pride and worshiping god’s on husband’s side. So in short a girl without freedom but with pride of maintaining a family happily.

Secondly, it can also mean the responsibility of a dutiful wife in bringing up a fair son (not skin tone) but fair in treating people equally and fair in looking after his family and being a good person in the society.
