Given that a bacteria multiplies in such a way that the number of bacteria present on one day is equal to the square of the number of bacteria present on the previous day.

Also, It is given that the difference between the number of bacteria on second and first day is 156.

Wee have to find the number of bacteria present on the second day.

Let the number of bacteria on the first day be x.

Then on the second day, the number of bacteria would be .

But the difference between the numbers is given to be 156.

So,

⇒ Number of bacteria on second day - Number of bacteria on first day = 156

⇒ x² - x = 156

⇒ x² - x - 156 = 0

Here, the given algebraic expression is a quadratic equation, so let's find the zeroes of the given quadratic equation.

⇒ x² - 13x + 12x - 156 = 0

⇒ x(x - 13) + 12(x - 13) = 0

⇒ (x - 13)(x + 12) = 0

Here, x = 13 or -12

But number of something can't be negative in this case here, so The number of bacteria on the first day is 13.

Now, on the second day it would be the square of the number of bacteria on the first day, = 13² = 169.

Hence, 169 bacteria are there on the second day.
