process is called generalized transduction, a random or nearly random segment of the bacterial chromosome is transferred by the virus. Since all of the genes of the host chromosome are expected to be present in a population of transducing particles, this type of transduction is called generalized transduction.

In specialized transduction, temperate phage chromosomes are integrated into their host chromosome through a process of recombination. The recombination occurs at specific attachment sites present in both phage and host chromosome. Specialized transduction transfers only those host genes that are closely linked with the phage attachment site.
