Correct Question :

A bag contains 20 coins of denominations of 50 paise and Rs.1. The total value of the coins in the bag is 16. Find the number of coins of each denomination.

Solution :

Let number of coins of 50 paise be "

(M).

Number of coins of Rs.1 be (20 - M).

Total number of coins in bag is 16.

According to question,

=> 50 paise + Rs. 1 = 16

=> 50M (paise) + 20 - M (coins) = 16 (coins)

=> 50M/100 + (20 - M) = 16

=> M/2 + (20 - M) = 16

=> (M + 40 - 2M)/2 = 16

=> (40 - M)/2 = 16

=> 40 - M = 32

=> - M = 32 - 40

=> M = 8

So,

Number of 50 paise coins = M

=> 8

Number of Rs.1 coins = (20 - M)

=> (20 - 8)

=> 12

Bag contains 8, fifity paise coins and 12 one rupees coins.

50 paise coins = x

Rs 1 = 20 - x

According to question

= \frac{50x}{100} + 20 - x = 16

On solving we get

= x = 8

50 paise coins = 8

Rs 1 = 20 - 8 = 12
